Jets Benched QB Zach Wilson & Aaron Rodgers Somehow Is Feeling Guilty

Zach Wilson was forced back into the starting quarterback position by the New York Jets due to an injury that Aaron Rodgers admittedly felt bad about, but he still thinks the 2021 No. 2 selection has a great future in the NFL.

This week, Wilson was benched by the Jets and dropped to the third-string quarterback position. On Black Friday, the Jets take on the Miami Dolphins; Tim Boyle will start and Trevor Siemian will be the backup.

Aaron Rodgers addressed the matter on Tuesday during his weekly visit on The Pat McAfee Show:

“We need a spark, and obviously this is the decision that was made. I feel for Zach, I love Zach. Zach’s such a great kid and I do think he still has a bright future in the league. This has been a tough go for all of us. A lot of times in these situations there’s certain guys they’ve got to scapegoat, and I think there’s enough blame to go around at a number of positions. If you’ve got 10 guys doing it right on a play and one guy not, it’s hard to be efficient.”

While there is certainly plenty to blame, Wilson and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett have received the most attention.

“I do think he still has a bright future in the league, this has been a tough go for all of us…This is not how any of us thought this was gonna go dowm, it was me and my show, Zach getting to learn and watch it first hand and not have the pressure to go out there and play and so obviously this is disappointing and I have some personal guilt around the whole thing/

” I’m p-ssed that I wasn’t able to play…if I was out there, I feel like I would be playing well, there would be different narratives around our team, Zach would have had the opportunity to learn and grow without the pressure on him this season.”

Although Rodgers’ Achilles rupture in the season opener on September 11 has hurt the Jets, they had thought that he would be their QB savior. The Jets are 4-6 and in third position in the AFC East; they are behind the Buffalo Bills (6-5) and Dolphins (7-3) but ahead of the 2-8 New England Patriots.

Rodgers has confidence in Boyle, the Jets’ new starter after he served as the Green Bay Packers’ backup from 2018 to 20. However, Rodgers insisted that Wilson is not the only reason for the Jets’ struggles this season.

“I’m happy for Tim. Tim is a great dude. … Tim has always been an expert of the offense and understood all the intricacies. Now he has to go out there and execute and do it at a high level,” Rodgers said.’

As the starting quarterback for the Jets in ten games in 2023, Wilson completed six passes for touchdowns and seven for interceptions. With New York on a three-game losing streak and him having only thrown two touchdown passes in his previous six games, the club decided to switch things up at quarterback.
